Where the data comes from
From the regional internet registries (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, AFRINIC, LACNIC) and internet routing data. It tells you who owns the network and where it is registered.
How accurate is it?
Country is usually right for servers. City-level “IP geolocation” is an estimate from commercial databases and is often wrong, so we don’t guess it.
Frequently asked questions
No. An IP identifies a network, not a street address. Only the internet provider can link an IP to a customer, and only for legal requests.
Cloud providers sometimes register address blocks in their head-office country, even if the data centre is elsewhere.
An Autonomous System Number identifies a network on the internet (for example a hosting company or ISP).
